Poornima Kartik is a trained Odissi dancer with over 20+ years of dancing and teaching under her belt. By professional qualification she is an architect and has decided to listen to her heart and pursue her passion for dance full time.
Poornima Kartik has had the good fortune of being trained in Odissi by noted danseuse Guru Jhelum Paranjape in Smitalay, Mumbai 20+ years.
Additionally, Poornima counts among her blessings the discipline and fine-tuning of technique under the keen eyes of Guru Late Padmavibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Sujata Mohapatra.
This sound grooming resulted in her being invited as a day-scholar at N rityagram, Bangalore for a year.
Poornima Kartik has been an integral part of Smitalay’s Ensemble and has performed in many of their full-fledged Odissi productions. In addition, she has performed with Smitalay across the country in prestigious festivals like Mukteshwar in Bhubaneshwar, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in Mumbai, Janmashtami Festival in Mathura, Thiba Palace Arts Festival in Ratnagiri and Anubhuti by NCPA in Mumbai to name a few.
She has a special place in her heart dancing as lead for Bahinai – a production based on poems by the famed poetess Bahinabai, who was astute, wise and thus empowered without being constrained by her being an illiterate, rural Indian.
Another lead role Poornima Kartik cherishes is that of Radha from the production Chitrapat Ke Krishna Kanhaiya – where Radha acts as witness to Krishna’s myriad stories as told through popular songs, both new and old.
Poornima Kartik finds the joy of sharing very fulfilling and wishes to reach out to the upcoming generations and help crystallize their dreams in the performance and arts space through her dance.
Poornima incorporates elements from Feldenkrais method that she learned under Michel Casanovas to help students bring about awareness and integration in movement whilst learning to dance. Incorporating such lateral techniques uniquely engages and enriches the practitioner/student along with making it easy and fun for one and all.
